Drawing
Drawing has many attitudes & many applications: one can walk upon a 2300 square foot Elementary School linoleum foyer floor; or catch the choreographed, lit glimmer of twelve capes drawn twice - dancing on a capacious stage; or linger before the visages of a male & female Mountain Lion, drawn for a Neighborhood Art House; or find solace within a sunny ‘Secret Garden’ graced with Allium Giganteum; or retain ‘magical moments’ in sketchbooks of memory.

Drawing can & does connect separate communities & levels of awareness & understanding. As an ephemeral concept it can emerge in any medium, to any purpose, in any scale (intimate to spacious), using disparate (ancient to ethereal - recognized to unknown), ‘tools’ in order to consider & resolve specific ideas & projects.

Gardens of Raku Place
The Gardens (numbering eighteen), are the creation of 2 artists; Steven (a sculptor / educator - Professor / Art Department / Edinboro State University, Edinboro, Pennsylvania), & Susan (artist / Chairman Emeritus Pennsylvania Council on the Arts), who in 1974 acquired a littered, neglected 47 acre rural landscape. Year after year (as time & treasure allows), they work to transform it into numerous botanical spaces that are variously, under construction, freshly tender (full of promise), in full vigor, maturing or in senescence are in need of a fresh beginning. Fourteen pools & ponds, five bridges, a Hungarian Tea House, a Primrose Path, a Moss Garden, Spirit Bridges & a Mountain are currently populated with perennials, trees & shrubs in a Zone 4 climate close by the shores of Lake Erie & the Ohio, New York State borders.

Gardens serve many purposes. At Raku Place they provide a physical & psychological respite from the rigors & discipline of interior monologues & image making. Sharing the process is part of the joy of creating.

Private, guided tours of the Gardens of Raku Place (in support of the Erie Art Museum) are by appointment only.
